When I woke up I really thought I was dead, but instead of seeing heaven, I saw that silly little boy in his white bearskin hat poking me with a stick.
"Hello? Are you dead? Hello?" When he saw me open my eyes he excitedly rushed to my side. "Hello? Miss? Are you okay?"
"I don't know…" I couldn't really remember what happened, I just remember my father kissing my forehead and telling me that this injection might save my life, then it all went black.
"World war three…they just dropped the last bomb. I think everyone else died…I don't know how you or I lived..."
"What?" I sat up, and looked at my body, my dress was covered in ashes. "Could this be the nuclear apocalypse my father told me about…" I didn't believe it would ever happen, I had relied on science to rule out anything like that. My father was a scientist…some people thought he was mad, but I knew he wasn't.
"Yeah," He reached out and helped me to my feet, I felt dizzy as I stood.
"Where are we?"
"Your house… I guess," That's when I saw all the broken bottles and the colorful liquids spilled everywhere and I remembered everything.
"I…I don't think he made it," He said, pointing at my father's mangled body half burnt, half ashes.
"That's not my father," I told him, even though I knew it was true. "That's not him," The boy looked at me like he didn't know how to say, finally he reached for my shoulder.
"My name is Finn," I turned, looked away from my father's body.
"I don't really remember who I am…I mean; I know who I was but…I don't remember my name,"
"Well…let's find out," He said starting to sift through the piles of ashes. After a minute, he pulled up a big safety deposit box, black and burned. I slowly started to walk towards it and reached out to touch the box, which spilled into a pile of ashes as soon as I did. "Hey look…" He said, pulling out an almost ruined piece of paper. "It's a birth certificate," Immediately I grabbed it from his small hands, eager to know who I was.
"Bonnibel…" I read my name out loud, even though it didn't sound like mine. "I can't read the last name…" He looked it, studied the paper very hard before turning to me.
"I can't read," He was such a silly little boy.
"Well, I suppose I'm Bonnibel, and your Finn…now what?"
"Now… we look for other survivors,"
"Should we even bother? There's nothing left…there's not even a sustainable food source," He looked up at me with these, big, sad eyes and that's when I knew I had to tell him everything would be okay, even though I knew it wasn't.
"Quick!" He said, pointing to the giant dam by the edge of town, the walls were slowly breaking as water seeped out. "We gotta get to higher ground!" I grabbed him and holding in my arms I ran as fast as I could and on top of the biggest hill I could find, we watched our entire city fall underwater, and there was nothing we could do. I laid down in the grass, panting and out of breath.
"Um…Bonnibel?" He said nervously. "Look at your face…" I couldn't see my face, so I had no idea what he was talking about.
"Your…your turning…pink?" Just as he said that I looked at my hair, the ends of what had been long brown hair was now a thick, sticky substance. "It…it looks like…bubblegum?" He said smelling it. I pulled my almost entirely bubblegum covered hair away from him.
"Don't worry about me right now," He turned away from me, alarmed and soon walked off to look for survivors.
"Hello? Hello!" He called over and over, his little voice echoing in the barren waste land.
"Ahh!" Came a new, loud and powerful voice as a little girl plummeted from a tree just above my head. Immediately Finn rushed over to her. "Who are you guys?" She asked. She looked like she was maybe 13, with short black hair and a raggedy overall dress on.
"I'm Finn…and she's Bonnibel…who are you?"
"Marceline," She said casually, reaching for her teddy bear and setting it on her lap. "And this is Hambo,"
"What's a Hambo?" I asked with a slight laugh.
"His NAME, is Hambo," She obviously had taken offense to my comment.
"How are you…still alive?" Finn asked, looking her over.
"My Dad's the lord of evil. He bite me a long time ago, I'm a vampire. Plus I'm 600 years old,"
"What? No you're not," I had to say it.
"Oh yeah?! Then what are these?" She moved her hair off to the side to show her neck that had two, equal length apart bite marks, they were dark and looked infected with dried blood all around them.
"Ewww…" Finn said, getting in close to the bite marks for a better look.
"Plus I only eat shades of red, that's how you know I'm not bluffing," She seemed rather self confident in herself.
"You're NOT a vampire,"
"Look…guys we need to focus on survival…let's make camp, Bonnie, why don't you look for food? And Marceline…you and Hambo should look for something we can use as shelter," Me and Marceline gave each other a nasty look before walking in opposite directions. I was lucky to see a bush of raspberries nearby, not clean or even fresh, and I wasn't sure if editable was on the list either, but I picked them, only about a handful of them were salvageable.
"Finn?" I called as he came over to me. "What else do you think we can eat…?"
"Umm," He looked around and soon came to a bush. "We'll eat this,"
"What?" I laughed, thinking he was joking but he seemed incredibly serious.
"What else are we suppose to eat? Let's fry them…I'll make a fire," He walked off, leaving me to pick up the dry leaves from the bush. I brought them back to our 'home base' where Marceline was using a tattered blanket as a roof over some saplings.
